An Analysis of The Shawshank Redemption Based on Lefebvre’s Spatial Theory
Abstract:The Shawshank Redemption is a famous novel written by American writer Stephen Edwin King in 1982. The novel is a narrative that tells the story of Andy’s suffering in the dark Shawshank prison. Andy lives in such a bad situation, but he is still full of hope, and eventually achieves self-redemption with unremitting efforts. The author reveals the good and evil of human nature to the public through Andy’s self-redemption path, which shows how the institutionalized individual redeems himself from the body to the soul. This paper will analyze The Shawshank Redemption from three aspects: physical space, social space, and spiritual space, taking the perspective of the space theory of Lefebvre, which uncovers the deeper connotation of space in this novel.
