Exposure keratopathy is an inflammation of the cornea caused by the loss of eyelid protection and exposure to air, resulting in corneal drying, epithelial cell shedding and secondary infection. The most common risk factors include protrusion of the eyeballs, eyelid defects, ectropion, facial palsy, sedation/mechanical ventilation, surgical retention of the upper eyelid or incomplete eyelid closure. Exposed keratitis is often accompanied by corneal epithelial defects and the formation of new blood vessels, and even purulent corneal ulcer in severe cases, which is a great threat to patients’ vision. So the prevention and treatment of exposure keratitis is very important.
